About

Help Bring Clean Water to NC Neighborhoods Devastated by Hurricane Helene

HHI (Healthy Hands Initiative) and Water Mission nonprofits are partnering to bring relief to those impacted by Hurricane Helene through HHI chapters located at the UNC Chapel Hill, NC State University, and Duke University.

Help us Reach $50,000. Every Dollar Counts. Directly through YOUR HHI Chapter.

To UNC Tar Heels – If every UNC student contributes $1, over 32,000 could be raised.

To NC State Wolfpack – If every NCSU student contributes $1, over 37,000 could be raised.

To Duke's Blue Devils – If every Duke student contributes $1, nearly 17,000 could be raised.

How Do We Bring Clean Water to NC Families Impacted by Hurricane Helene?

On Thursday, September 26, Hurricane Helene unleashed its devastating Category 4 fury upon the southeastern United States. The storm caused severe flooding, claimed hundreds of lives, caused up to $35 billion in damage, and left millions of people without power or safe water in western North Carolina.

In response, the Water Mission nonprofit deployed their disaster response team to the hardest-hit areas of North Carolina, with emergency safe water flowing in multiple locations between Asheville and Boone. As of October 18, there are 13 safe water treatment systems operational in nine locations, and we are working towards having 20 systems operational in the days ahead. The video below shows Water Mission’s purification process in action. Your donation helps the integration of vital water treatment systems in select devastated areas deprived from clean drinking water.

Learn More about HHI

Since its launch in 2020 at UNC Chapel Hill, HHI has been committed to providing sustainable clean water solutions internationally to the most devastated communities, starting in southeast Asia and Africa. We have primarily relied on constructing Afridev hand pumps among our beneficiaries to provide access to clean water and promote safer water and sanitation practices. HHI’s most recent project constructed a water hand-pump in an orphanage in Liberia, launched in spring of 2024, to bring hundreds of children clean drinking water.
